Thesis: The seven-day structure is defined by BTC’s relative resilience and ETH’s weaker range position, not by a confirmed directional breakout. BTC lost 1.968% against ETH’s 5.926% decline, while ETH traded through a wider percentage range and finished much closer to its weekly low. For active traders, the useful question is whether that performance gap persists or narrows—not whether BTC’s smaller loss alone establishes strength across the market.

What happened

The Binance observations cover seven completed UTC days, October 8–14, 2026, ending at 2026-10-14 23:59:59.999 UTC. BTCUSDT finished at 81,682.01, while ETHUSDT finished at 2,421.60. Both posted negative supplied seven-day returns.

BTC declined 1.968%, trading between 80,393.56 and 84,352.00. Its supplied seven-day range was 4.924%. ETH declined 5.926%, with a low of 2,403.69, a high of 2,587.28, and a supplied range of 7.638%.

Calculation: BTC outperformed ETH by 3.958 percentage points on the supplied returns. Expressed as a relative-price change, the implied ETH/BTC return was approximately −4.04%, calculated as `(1 − 0.05926) / (1 − 0.01968) − 1`. This is a calculation from the two USDT-pair returns, not a separately supplied ETHBTC market observation.

The closing locations sharpen that distinction. BTC finished approximately 32.5% of the way up its weekly low-to-high span; ETH finished approximately 9.8% of the way up its span. These positions describe the final close within the observed extremes. They do not reveal the sequence of trading inside the week.

Independent venue check: Coinbase Exchange daily candles for the same seven completed UTC days, October 8–14, show BTC-USD declining 2.052% from the October 8 open to the October 14 close, versus 5.991% for ETH-USD. This independently confirms BTC’s relative outperformance; the precise returns differ from Binance because the venue and USD/USDT quote pairs differ. The Coinbase API also returns an October 15 row at this query boundary; that row is excluded from both calculations. See Coinbase BTC-USD daily candles and Coinbase ETH-USD daily candles.

Why it matters

Interpretation: BTC was stronger than ETH on a relative basis, but neither asset demonstrated positive seven-day performance. Calling BTC resilient is defensible only in that comparative sense. A smaller decline is not the same as an established upward trend.

ETH combined a larger loss, a wider percentage range and a close near the bottom of that range. Together, those observations describe a weaker closing structure than BTC’s. They do not establish why it occurred or whether it will continue.

ETH’s percentage range was approximately 1.55 times BTC’s. That is relevant when comparing the size of the observed trading envelopes, but it is not a realized-volatility estimate: a high-to-low range contains no information about how often price moved, how long it stayed near either extreme, or the order of those moves.

The later global snapshot adds context without resolving direction. CoinGecko reported BTC dominance of 59.54% and ETH dominance of 10.56%. Those figures describe shares of global crypto market capitalization at retrieval. They cannot establish that BTC gained dominance during the Binance observation window because no earlier dominance reading was supplied.

Calculation: Combined quote volume across these two Binance pairs was 12,313,971,803.54 USDT, or approximately 12.314 billion USDT. BTC accounted for approximately 63.85% of that total and ETH for 36.15%. BTC’s quote turnover was approximately 1.77 times ETH’s.

These are traded quote amounts, not net purchases, capital inflows or market-wide turnover. Every executed trade has a buyer and seller. Without a comparison period, the totals also cannot establish whether participation increased or decreased.

The supplied range percentages are consistent with `(seven-day high − seven-day low) / seven-day low × 100`, subject to rounding. Closing position is calculated as `(last close − low) / (high − low) × 100`. These are different measures: one describes the size of the envelope, the other the close’s location inside it.

The CoinGecko snapshot was retrieved at 2026-10-15 08:05:53.244369 UTC, approximately eight hours and six minutes after the Binance window ended. It reported:

  • Global crypto market-cap change over its own trailing 24-hour window: −5.47% in USD.
  • BTC dominance: 59.54%.
  • ETH dominance: 10.56%.
  • Calculated combined BTC and ETH dominance: 70.10%, leaving approximately 29.90% for the rest of the tracked market.

The global 24-hour change is neither a seven-day return nor a measure ending at the Binance cutoff. It should not be substituted for either asset’s weekly performance.

Risks

The principal analytical risk is mixing observation windows. The later global decline cannot explain the earlier seven-day BTC and ETH results, and its magnitude is not directly comparable with those returns as though all three shared a common start and end.

A second risk is overstating what weekly aggregates reveal. The supplied data omit daily sequencing, intraday behavior and trading distribution within each range. They therefore cannot identify repeated tests, failed breaks or sustained acceptance around a particular price.

The observed highs and lows are reference boundaries, not proven support or resistance. Likewise, quote volume does not identify directional flows, leverage, open interest or trader positioning. No such conclusions are warranted here.

Finally, market-cap dominance and exchange-pair turnover measure different things. BTC’s 59.54% global dominance cannot be directly compared with its 63.85% share of the two-pair Binance volume total as evidence of over- or under-participation.

Scenarios

Relative weakness persists: If subsequent matched-window returns continue to favor BTC and ETH remains lower within its own range, the current relative-strength interpretation would remain intact. That could occur even if both assets rise or both decline; relative performance does not specify absolute direction.

The gap narrows: If ETH begins outperforming BTC over a comparable subsequent window and improves its range position, the present divergence would be weakening. An isolated price bounce would be less informative than improvement in both relative return and closing location.

The observed envelopes give way: Future trading outside BTC’s 80,393.56–84,352.00 or ETH’s 2,403.69–2,587.28 span would extend beyond this sample’s boundaries. Whether that becomes a durable structural change would require subsequent observations. The supplied aggregates cannot distinguish a brief excursion from sustained trading outside the range.

Invalidation

The historical calculations are fixed to the supplied window; what can be invalidated is their usefulness as a current trading framework.

The BTC-relative-resilience interpretation would need revision if a subsequent comparable period showed ETH outperforming and no longer displaying the weaker closing position. The range-based framework would become less useful if sustained trading developed outside the observed envelopes.

Neither outcome can be assessed from the current dataset. Until fresh, time-aligned observations are available, the defensible conclusion remains limited: both assets declined, ETH underperformed, and the later global snapshot showed a separate 24-hour market-cap contraction.
